Ball, Sr., US Army (Ret.) 82, of Columbia, South Carolina, will be held at 10:30 o'clock, Friday, June 7, 2013, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to Friendship Place, Inc., P. O. Box 282, Georgetown, SC 29442 or to the Hospice Service of your choice.
Mr. Ball passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. He was born in Grassy Fork, TN on September 19, 1930, to Mary and Benjamin Ball. He entered the US Army in 1948 and retired in 1969. A true "tanker" at heart, his years of service included tours in Germany and Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, he worked for Westinghouse, NFD for an additional 22 years, retiring again in 1991.
An avid fisherman, he was also known to appreciate an occasional game of chance with family, friends and retirees. He delighted in the company of friends and family, the outdoors, and visits to the dog park with his companion, Sam the dog. A proud and doting father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was the happiest when surrounded by his wife of 59 years and his family.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Weitzel Ball; son Daniel G. Ball and his wife, Nelda Gray Ball; daughters Mary "Lou" Ball, Patricia A. Peter, Carolyn E. Cribb and her husband, William H. Cribb, Jr.; son, Charles E. Ball, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Redd Ball; nine grandchildren: Lauren, Christina, Trey, Bryan, Chase, Meredith, Sarah, Katie, and Charles; four great-grandchildren Maya, Sophie, Liam, and Eli.
