Fred Albert Davis, age 90, of Knoxville, passed away on Friday evening June 15, 2012. He was the son of the late Archie Lay Davis and Maggie Acuff Davis; and preceded in death by sisters, Jessie Messer and Twila Berry, Fred was of Baptist faith, a loving husband, devoted father and a friend to anyone in need. Quick with a joke, Fred had an approachable manner that set friends and strangers alike at ease. Fred spent his entire life in East Tennessee, with the exception of his service during World War II as First Sergeant of the 488th Quartermaster Corps Depot Company in the United States Army. Upon completing his service, Fred returned to Sharps Chapel, Tenn., married his wife, and entered into the general merchandising business. Over many years, Fred expanded his operations across East Tennessee to include farming, real estate and land development. Fred’s passion for the land of East Tennessee and the kind people of Union County was evident to all that knew him, and his generosity to so many he encountered there is a testament to his love for both. Fred leaves his wife Jessie Weaver Davis of 64 years; two daughters, Olivia Davis Clifford of Memphis, Tenn., and Debra Anne Davis of Knoxville; six grandchildren, Alexander DeWitt Graham III, Broderick Davis Clifford, Olivia Michelle Clifford, Wesley Ralston Baker, Winfield Scott Clifford and Davis Hughes Baker; and three great-grandchildren, Evelyn Winsome Graham, Alexander DeWitt Graham IV and Presley Ann Bowling. He leaves one sister, Ella Jean Coker of Knoxville, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Fred A. Davis Memorial Scholarship fund. Donations can be sent to P.O Box 183, Maynardville, TN 37807. Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2012, at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel in Knoxville, with Rev. Alexander DeWitt Graham III officiating. Entombment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.
