Louise Yvonne Hilke, 81, of La Crosse died on Monday, April 20, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born on Nov. 10, 1927, in Shelbyville, Ind., to Woodford and Ruth (Dake) Richeson . She married Bernard G. Hilke on April 15, 1950, in La Crosse, and he preceded her in death in 2003. Louise worked with young children as a librarian for many years at Northern Hills Elementary School, Onalaska, before she became the gifted and talented coordinator for the Onalaska School District. In 1988 she was recognized for teaching excellence by her colleagues. Louise was a prolific reader and lover of all books. Her love for learning was evident throughout her life. She was a wonderful swimmer, and enjoyed crosswords and knitting. Louise was a loving and giving person, and her family always came first.
She is survived by a son, Christopher Hilke of La Crosse; two daughters, Mary (John) McKinley of Mound, Minn., and Sheila (Bill Oldenburg) Hilke of La Crosse; two grandchildren, Cassie Louise Hilke and her fiancé Bob Locke, and Laura Louise Hilke; a brother, Thomas (Nancy) Richeson of Ajo, Ariz.; a nephew, Bruce (Jean) Mahoney of West Salem; and a niece, Jane Martel of Des Moines, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Woodford Richeson ; her mother, Ruth Stelhorn; her stepmother, Emma Despain; and her many beloved pets.
A memorial gathering to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, April 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Radisson Hotel La Crosse, 200 Harborview Plaza.
