U.S. Veteran Richard (Dick) W. Leins, 97, of Azalea Trace, Pensacola, FL, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at West Florida Hospital, Pensacola, FL. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI, October 4, 1912, the son of Frank and Emily Leins. He graduated with highest honors with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Louisville in 1938. Among the awards received were the Alpha Pi prize for scholarship, leadership and engineering ability, the national award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and membership in the Sigma Tau National Honorary Engineering Fraternity. He was assistant chief engineer, chemicals branch, war production board, Washington D.C. before entering the Navy. He graduated from the United States training school for naval officers, Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York. His service in the Navy during WWII involved building ships in Boston, MA. and other special engineering projects. After leaving the navy, he pursued a management engineering career in the field of textiles. In 1960 he moved his family to Pensacola where he worked at American Cyanamid until retirement. Community activities included volunteer service at First United Methodist Church and board member of Escambia County Utility Authority. He was an avid golfer and active member of the Pensacola Country Club for many years. His wife of 50 years Louise Liggett Leins preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Gregory Leins and his wife Cynthia of Houston, TX and son Ronald Leins and his wife Nancy of Tampa, FL. and four grandchildren Michael and Jeffrey of Austin, TX, Kristen of Cypress, TX and Bradley of Tampa, FL. A private family internment service will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Bayview Memorial Park. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Azalea Trace Retirement Community at 2:00 PM with Dr. Wesley H. Wachob officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandsons Michael, Jeffrey, and Bradley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Pensacola or the American Cancer Society or the charity of ones choice. The family wishes to thank the staff at Willowbrooke Court/Azalea Trace for their care and assistance. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
