DYKES , MRS. VIOLA G. widow of the late Reverend Dewitt Dykes , died January 11, 2007 at Hillcrest Medical Nursing Institute after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Dykes was the youngest of nine children born to the late Julius and Annie Wilkins Logan of Lake Lure, NC. She was educated in the Rutherford County, NC School System and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC and a Master's Degree from the University of Tennessee. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Over a career span of 31 years, Mrs. Dykes served in the Knoxville Public School System as a teacher and principal at Vine Jr. High School, Cansler Elementary School and Lonsdale Elementary School. Upon her retirement, she assumed responsibilities as Office Manager for the architectural firm of Dewitt S. Dykes & Associates. She also held pastoral responsibilities for 1 1/2 years at Martin Chapel United Methodist Church under the guidance of her husband. Mrs. Dykes is survived by: a loving step-daughter, Reida B. (George) Gardiner; a step-son, Dewitt S. Dykes , Jr.; four grandchildren, Jay Gardiner, Veronica L. Thomas, George Dewitt Gardiner, Laura Marie Dykes ; one great-granddaughter, Violet Thomas all of Detroit. She is also survived by: one sister, Mrs. Annie Lee Keaton of Winston-Salem, NC; several nieces and nephews including Trevia (Floyd) Ogburn of Cary, NC and Laretta Keaton of Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Unity Mortuary where services will be rendered at 1:00 p.m. by the Reverend Mike Jackson. Interment, Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa Highway. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, 1927 Dandridge, Ave., Knoxville, TN 37915-1909.
