Essie K. Barton was born in Newport, Tennessee, on November 24, 1928. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on February 23, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents Oray and Roland Dykes Sr., husband, Mervin Barton, siblings Della Saunders, Nettie Sue Swagerty, Mammie Julian, Marian Berry, Bernice Banks, and Roland Dykes Jr., son, Kim Derek Hannon, and grandson Mikey Grimes, son-in-law John Gill and daughter-in-law Keren Diane Barton. At an early age Essie confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior, and joined Woodlawn United Methodist Church where she was a devoted member. Sister Barton served in many leadership and community positions throughout her church years. Essie’s former education began at Tanner School in Newport and ended with a Masters of Education degree from Carson Newman University. Essie was a master teacher, who loved her students and co-workers. She worked tirelessly for all young persons, helping them pursue their goals and achieve success. Her teaching career span for over 50 years with the last ten years working in adult education. Essie spent her latter years enjoying her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She never stopped preaching the importance of education and the difference that learning impacts one’s life. She leaves to cherish her memories sons Charles “Skippy” Barton of Fayetteville, NC, Michael Hannon (Pamela) of Newport, TN, Renea Hannon (Newport, TN), Helaine Gill of Stone Mountain, GA, five grandchildren, Tonya Hannon of Newport, TN, Jason Grimes (Stephanie) of Knoxville, TN, Janea Grimes of Knoxville, TN, Johnathan Hannon (Shelby) of Knoxville, TN, and Sara Hannon of Newport, TN. Four Great-grandchildren, Raina Hannon of Newport, TN, Dylan Dodgin of Parrottsville, TN, Kinslei and Kyson Grimes both of Knoxville, TN; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a lifelong special friend Betty Jean Robinson. Funeral services will be at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 26, 2016 in the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Samuel Dzobo officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm on Friday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral services. Family and friends may sign the guest register online at www.manesfuneralhome.com.
