Elizabeth Carol Dykes was born on May 30, 1930. She departed this life at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 1998 at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee in Knoxville after an extended illness following heart surgery.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Newport, where she attended and graduated from Tanner School. Upon graduation from high school she enrolled at Morristown College.
In September 1995 she retired from Hunts Foods, formerly Stokely Van Camp, Inc. and Quaker Oats, after 30 years of service.
She was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was an usher and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Elizabeth married Roland Dykes, Jr. on April 8, 1951. This union produced seven children. All those who knew Elizabeth, knew she lived for and loved her children dearly. She was a dedicated, loving, caring, and supportive mom and wife. When not spending time with her family or friends, she enjoyed traveling with her husband to various cities and states.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her dedicated and loving husband, Roland Dykes, Jr; seven children, Roland, III, of Talbott, Stephanie Stewart, of Newport, Gary Alan, of Newport, Kathy Sims, of Knoxville, Vivian Reed, of San Antonio, TX, Maurice “Dion,” of Newport, Eric Scott “Scotty,” of Knoxville, and one step-son, Terry Stewart, of Newport; four daughters-in-law, Rhonda, Carla, Mary Lynn, and Stacey; three sons-in-law, Don Stewart, John Sims, and Mark Reed; thirteen grandchildren, Terra, Brian, Terrence, Mickey, Trey, Chasity, Damian, Garren Tyler (G.T.), Kristina, Evan, Chelsey, Dion, and Zephanie; mother and father, Virgil and Maudella Dirl, of Newport; one sister, Betty Jean Robinson, of Newport; six sisters-in-law, Essie Barton, Nettie Sue Swagerty, and Bernice Banks, all of Newport, Mamie Ray Julian, of Chattanooga, Marian Berry, of Springfield, MA, and Della Saunders, of Indianapolis, IN; special aunt and uncle; Lousie Davidson, of Newport, and John Swagerty, of Florida; and a host of special nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, September 28, and the funeral will begin after the wake.
