Bernice Dykes-Banks, age 83, of Newport was born on August 18, 1922. She departed this life on Friday, December 9, 2005, at 5:07 p.m. after a lengthy illness.
She lived in Chicago, Illinois for the majority of her adult life. While in Chicago, she was employed by the Chicago Board of Education until her retirement. She moved to Newport in the early 1980s where she resided until her death. She joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Clanton Banks, of Chicago, Illinois; son, Cornelius Dykes, Sr., of Chicago, Illinois; father, Roland A. Dykes, Sr., of Newport, Tennessee; mother, Oray Dykes, of Newport, Tennessee; sister, Nettie Sue Swagerty, of Newport, Tennessee; and brother, Roland A. Dykes, Jr., of Newport, Tennessee.
She is survived by sisters, Della Saunders (Indianapolis, ID); Marian D. Berry (Springfield, MA); Mamie Julian (Chattanooga, TN); and Essie Barton (Newport, TN).
She is survived by her grandchildren, Cornelius Dykes, Jr., of Chicago, Illinois; Clinton M. ( Tawana M.) Dykes, Sr.; of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. Nicole (Joe) Robinson, of Liberty, Mississippi; great-grandchildren, Cornelius Dykes, III, of Chicago,Illinois; Clinton M. Dykes, Jr., of Chicago,Illinois; Portia D. Peden of Chicago,Illinois; Tameka S. Lenoir and Tyler Y. Lenoir of Chicago, Illinois; Darrion and JaBarri Robinson, of Liberty, Mississippi; great-great grandchildren, Aniyah M. Dykes and Ashanti R. Dykes, of Chicago,Illinois; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, in Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sharon L. Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens on Thursday, December 15, at 11:00 a.m.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, December 14, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home.
