Roland ‘Trey’ Dykes announces bid for State Representative
Roland ‘Trey’ Dykes, III is seeking the 11th District seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives in the November election.
Dykes, who will be running as an Independent, is a 1969 graduate of Cocke County High School and graduated from UT-K in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. He later attended Jacksonville University’s MBA program for working executives.
He recently retired after a 35-year career as a sales and marketing executive with Xerox Corporation, ConocoPhillips, AT&T, and, most recently, Quaker Oats/Pepsico.
Dykes’ interest in seeking political office stems from his participation in the Cocke County Leadership Class of 2013. “As part of our class studies,” says Dykes, “our class visited Nashville where I had the chance to see our state government at work and how things are done in Nashville. Three of my UT classmates are currently serving in the legislature and have encouraged me to run.”
His interest in politics also stems from talks he had with his father, the late Roland A. Dykes, Jr., who was serving as Newport’s mayor at the time of his death in 1995. “We talked a lot about serving our community,” Dykes recalls, “and I know he would be happy with my decision.”
Economic development and work force development top the list of Dykes’ priorities. “I have lived in other communities,” he explains, “and have experienced firsthand the perception others have of Newport and Cocke County, a perception that is just not true.
“My background has always been corporate business and I am definitely a pro-business advocate. I’m overwhelmed by the growth I see in Jefferson, Hamblen, Greene, and Sevier Counties. The fact that they have grown so much more than we have goes back to the fact that Cocke County just doesn’t have the work force here. I want to see this changed.”
Dykes and his wife Rhonda, who has worked 28 years as a claims supervisor for State Farm Insurance, have one son, Roland A. Dykes, IV, a UT graduate and a bank analyst in Knoxville.
The son of the late Roland A. and Elizabeth (Smith) Dykes, Jr., the candidate has seven siblings: Terry Stewart of Newport, retired Newport policeman now working in construction; Stephanie Dykes Stewart of Newport, who has worked 38 years with the Head Start program; Gary Dykes of Newport, who works at ConAgra; Dr. Kathy Dykes-Sims of Knoxville; Executive Director of Human Resources with the Knoxville Board of Education; Vivian Dykes Reed of San Antonio, TX, who has taught for over 30 years; Dion Dykes of Newport, who teaches in Knoxville; and Scotty Dykes of Knoxville, who is the State Farm Insurance agent in Harriman.
Dykes is a member of the Newport Kiwanis Club, president of Tanner Preservation Alliance, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
He also follows in his family’s tradition as a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church. “My great-grandfather, Rev. Henry Sanford Roland Dykes, served as Woodlawn’s pastor,” says the candidate, “and his name is on the church cornerstone. Every time I enter the building I see that, and it’s nice to know that’s my heritage.”
