WALLIS , CARL HENRY - age 86 well known landscape designer & Vice President of Howell Nurseries passed away Saturday October 1, 2005 at Holston Health Care Center. He was born in St Louis, Mo and attended the University of Missouri where he studied horticulture. A veteran of WWII, he served in the South Pacific in the Army with a rank of Sergeant Major in the Infantry Battalion. He came to Knoxville in 1947 and started work at Howell Nurseries Inc where he met his future wife Florence Howell. He is well known for his unique way of pruning shrubs by hand with a pocket knife. Mr. Wallis was a member of Magnolia Ave United Methodist Church where he was head usher, and was on the Board of Trustees. He was also on the board of trustees for Old Gray Cemetery member and former President of the Knoxville Men's Garden Club, now called Gardener's Forum a 25 year member of the Toastmasters Club of Fountain City, and 30 year member of the Smoky Mtn. Woodcarvers. He was also a faithful attendee of the woodcarver class at the O'Conner Center every Friday morning. Survivors: daughter: Margaret Ann Gehring & husband Bobby grandson: Jeremy Zimmerman & wife Tara sisters-in-law: Katherine Howell of Knoxville, Mary K. Hodges of Sevierville & Josie Wallis of St Louis, Mo. several nieces & nephews. " Special Thanks to Dr Alan Solomon for being a true friend, Katherine Howell for making sure he had plenty to eat and Joyce Riddle for being a good neighbor and taking care of his garden and to the Staff of Holston Health Care. Funeral service 7:00 p.m. Monday Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with Rev Walter Willis officiating. Family & friends will meet at the main entrance to Greenwood Cemetery 9:45 a.m. Tuesday for interment at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Magnolia Ave United Methodist Church 2700 Magnolia Ave. Knoxville 37914 or to Knoxville Botanical Gardens 2743 Wimpole Ave Knoxville 37914. The Family will receive friends 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
