Tomie Burchfield age 81, went to sleep here on earth to wake up in heaven with his beloved wife of 61 years, Nellie and his son, Johnny on Monday, January 9, 2012. Tomie was born in Cades Cove to Lydia Burchfield in Chestnut Flats on Parsons Branch Road. When leaving the Cove, he started Townsend School. He graduated High School and left to serve in Korea where he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal. Upon returning from Korea, he was then employed by the City of Maryville for over 30 years. At the time of his retirement, he had reached the level of manager of the electrical department. He was a member of Kinzel Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia Burchfield; brothers, Kara, Olie, Charlie; sisters & brothers-in-law, Flora & Sherman Proctor and Novella & George Burchfield. Survivors include his daughter & son-in-law, Wanda & Michael Boring; grandson, Samuel Patrick Boring, a junior at Maryville College. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2012 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Funeral service will be at 7:00 pm with Rev. Dale Buchanan officiating.
