Charles Kenneth Ownby, 89, peacefully died at his home in East Ridge on Friday, April 2.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, James Wesley Ownby and Julia Roseanne Ogle Ownby; his wife of 59 years, Willie Gaston Ownby; and all eleven of his siblings.
He was born in Bradley County, and was particularly proud of his Smokey Mountain lineage. He was a veteran of the National Guard and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry as a supervisor after 36 years.
Ken spent his retirement years caring for his wife, cooking for his family and especially enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a recognized artisan, designing and building miniature log cabins, wagons and related accessories.
He was Baptist by faith, and was an avid and daily reader of his Bible.
He is survived by his son, Ken (Alyce) Ownby, Chattanooga, and daughter, Cindy (Larry) Shipp, Lafayette, Ga.; grandchildren, Lori (Gary) McNabb and Donna (Ronnie) Massey of Ringgold, and Chris (Kristin) Ownby, Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Zach and Gage McNabb, Jordan Burnette, Mattilee Massey, Kendall and Lily Ownby, and Lilly Slaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the assistance and support of Hospice of Chattanooga in their Pappaw’s care.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 165 Hamm Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37405.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, April 5, at the funeral home.
There will be a short parlor service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the graveside services at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Pingel officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard.
Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.
