FOX, JOHN NELSON GREER JR. - 93 of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, died February 4, 2012, at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Born on April 28, 1918, in Sevierville, Tennessee, Mr. Fox was the son of John Nelson Greer Fox, Sr. and Hazel Bud Delius Fox. Ancestors of this line of the Fox family were among the first settlers in Sevier County, laying claim to parts of the Fair Garden area. John was a spinner of yarns, a treasure trove of East Tennessee and Sevier County lore. Colorful anecdotes of his childhood on Cedar Street took the listener back to a happy, simple way of life. He attended school in Sevierville and played on an undefeated, 1934 Sevier County High School football team. His memory was sharp and he was able to recount in detail his days working with a Civilian Conservation Corps gang in the Little River area of the Smoky Mountains National Park to operating an isotope-separating machine at Oak Ridge's Y12 plant during World War II. As a young man, John left Sevier County for Knoxville where he worked at Standard Knitting Mill and volunteered as a basketball referee for the Knoxville Recreation Department. His career aspirations took him in many directions. He served as Director of the Elizabethton, Tennessee, Boys Club. He found his niche in public relations and worked in that field at the American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Carson-Newman College and Tennessee Tech University. John returned to his Sevier County roots when he was hired as manager of Goldrush Junction, which eventually became Dollywood. In his later years, he was a reporter for The Mountain Press and authored the column "Going My Way" well into his eighties. His life-long love, wife Ruby Ola Fox, died on May 10, 2001, Sevierville. John and Ruby formed dynamic pair who loved Sevier County and the Smoky Mountains National Park. They promoted the beauty, recreation, history and activities of the area. Mr. Fox is survived by son David Fox of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; daughter Patricia Ann Adams and her husband Richard C. Adams of Noblesville, Indiana; grandson Andy Fox and his wife Ashley of Apex, North Carolina; granddaughter Laura Oliver and husband Richard of Noblesville, Indiana; grandson Tabb Adams and his wife Ruth of Sheridan, Indiana; grandson Karl Adams and his wife Emily of Crown Point, Indiana. Great grandchildren include Robyn Coolidge and her husband Curt of Ithaca, New York, Abby Fink of Noblesville, Indiana, Michael and Emma Adams of Crown Point, Indiana and Madeline and Ella Fox of Apex, North Carolina. The family welcomes the public to a memorial service Saturday, February 11, 2012, 5 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 509 Historic Nature Trail, Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The Reverend Charles Livermore will officiate. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Flowers should be sent to the church. Cremation arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
