James Eugene "Gene" Trentham first came to the South Fork when he was in the Air Force and stationed in Montauk. Except for a brief period when he lived in his native Tennessee, he never left once he met his future wife, the former Paula Hasselberger of East Hampton. They were married on Feb. 14, 1954.
Mr. Trentham died May 1 at McGraw Center Community Hospice of Northeastern Floridain Jacksonville. He had been ill for four years with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia, his family said.
The couple lived on Hand's Creek Road in East Hampton for much of their marriage,eventually building their own house and raising two children. Mr. Trentham was self-employed as a painting contractor until 2003. A golfer, he belonged to the South Fork Country Club in Amagansett. He also enjoyed fishing with friends.
He was born in Parrottsville, Tenn., on Sept. 1, 1931, to Lester Trentham and the former Dovie Stephens. He graduated from high school in Parrottsville.
About six years ago, after the death of their daughter, Debra Denton, the Trenthams moved to be with their other daughter, Tracy McCauslin, in Jacksonville Beach,Fla. She survives, as do five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Three brothers, L.B. Trentham, of Parrottsville, Tenn., Charles Trentham, of Newport,Tenn., and Alvin Trentham, of Jefferson City, Tenn., also survive.
Mr.Trentham was cremated. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
