Alvin M. Burns of Hixson died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in a local hospital.
He was 70. He was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, a member of Lakeway Baptist Church, Signal Mountain Masonic Lodge and was a retired maintenance supervisor for Harrison Bay State Park.
Mr. Burns worked for Combustion for 21 years.
He was an avid gospel music singer and choir director, having directed choirs for various area churches including Corinth, Mount Carmel, Chamberlain Heights, Pleasant Hill and John's Memorial Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen Burns ; one daughter, Jackie Emery, and two sisters, Willadean Burns and Ann McAlister.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Burns , Hendersonville, Tenn.; two daughters, Mary Thompson, Harrison, Jo Doty, McDonald, Tenn.; one brother, Donnie C. Burns , Chattanooga; three sisters, Katherine Denton, Hixson, Martha Tipton, Jasper, and Becky Elsea, Hixson; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Jesse Carl Nolan, the Rev. Guerney Beard, and the Rev. Jimmy Graves officiating.
Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
