NELSON, FRED M., JR. - 83, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2011, at Hillcrest North after battling Alzheimer's disease for seven or more years. He was a South Knoxville native and a 1946 graduate of Knoxville High School. He retired from Rohm and Haas in 1978. Fred was a Christian, a charter member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher, and dedicated choir member. He devoted his life to his Lord, his family, and his church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Oma Nelson; and infant daughter, Linda Gail. Survivors include Rose, his beloved wife of 62 years; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Rick Conner; daughter, Karen Fawver and friend, Rick Brewer; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lynn and J. C. Morgan; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Sally Nelson; and several nieces and nephews. The family thanks the staff of Trinity Hills Assisted Living, Hillcrest, and Caris Hospice for assisting with Fred's care in his last years and months. A celebration of life service will be held in the fellowship hall of St. Luke's UMC on Saturday, January 7. Friends may come and go between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Following the celebration service, friends and family will gather at Woodlawn Cemetery for a brief service conducted by Rev. Steve Johnson.
