Elwood P. Hastie, age 86, of Talbott, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at his residence.
He was a member and deacon of Manley Baptist Church, a Mason, a Kerbela Shriner, and a member of the Exchange Club and Smoky Mountain Chapter of Ex POW.
He also served in the U.S. Army for seven years, and was a Prisoner of War during World War II, having received the Bronze Star Medal and Combatic Medic award. He served in the Army Reserves for 30 years and was on the Tennessee Defense Force.
Mr. Hastie was an environmentalist for the Hamblen County Health Department and University of Tennessee, and a former owner of Area Pest Control Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Hastie and Daisy and William Vaughn; sister, Belva Wheeler; and step-sisters, Clara Vaughn and Virginia Vaughn.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nelle Hastie; sons, Jim (Maria) Hastie, of Knoxville, and John Hastie, of Vestal, N.Y.; daughter, Janelle (Ralph) Shoaf, of Morehead, Ky.; grandchildren, Jacob Shoaf, Alexander Shoaf, Bryant Hastie, and Michael Hastie; brother, Aldon (Louise) Vaughn, of Bean Station; and several nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Westside Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Richard Emmert officiating.
Interment will follow in Hamblen Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, at the funeral home.
