Al Boling, 55, of Charlotte, N.C., went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Al fought colon cancer for six years and because of his strength and determination, earned the nickname “Iron Man,” a phrase coined by his beloved minister Jimmy Howard. He was a spiritual man who loved Christ with all of his heart and touched the lives of everyone he met. Al had a bright spirit and was the life of the party. He was a great fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Some of his favorite hobbies included making BBQ with his best friend and son-in-law as well as making music with his daughters. Above all, he was a family man who was surrounded by the greatest friends in the world. He was very welcoming and considered every friend he had as part of his family too. Al attended Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn. He proudly served as a sonar technician in the U.S. Navy from 1975–1981. Until his heavenly departure, he was employed as the engineering manager at Flextronics Corp. He played piano at Asbury UMC, formerly played the trumpet on the praise team at University City UMC and sang in the choir at Memorial UMC. The family would like to thank Jimmy Exum, Rev. Jimmy Howard, Rev. Peggy Bridgers, CHOA, especially Dr. Stuart Salmon, Rick Davis and staff and CMC University 6th Floor Nurses and the Levine Dickson Hospice House, as well as all of the family and friends who enriched his life. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Levine-Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Dr., Huntersville, NC 28078, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Survivors include his mother, Grace Tipton Boling of Maryville; wife, Melinda Boling; daughters, Brooke Sherrill and husband Joseph of Charlotte and Bobbi Boling of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister, Mary Johnson of Maryville; stepgrandson, Jacob; and dog, Sonny. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Luther Boling. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2011, at Asbury United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In closing, Al (A.K.A. Bundy) says, “Go Vols!” Samuel S. James, Funeral Service Lic. of Huntersville, N.C., is serving the family. www.samuelsjamesfsl.com
