Mrs. Matilda Ownby, 87, of Shawnee died January 10, 1974 in a local hospital in Shawnee.
She was born in Sevier County, Tennessee on January 29, 1886. She and her late husband,
Avery J. Ownby moved to the Hazel Dell Community near Shawnee in 1912.
Mrs. Ownby moved to Shawnee in 1929, her husband died in September 1952. They were
married March 27, 1908. Avery J. Ownby served as Pottawatomie County Commissioner from
1927 until 1935 and later service das state representative in the 20th and 22nd sessions
of Oklahoma Legislature.
Mrs. Ownby was a member of the University Baptist Church in Shawnee and a former member
of the Spanish-American War Veterans Auxiliary. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2
p.m. in the Roesch Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jerry Barnes, pastor of University
Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Besides her son, owner of the Western Auto Store in Wagoner, Mrs. Ownby is survived by
one daughter, Mrs. Ray Mullen of Tulsa; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Ownby of Shawnee;
several grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two brothers, Rev. Joe Car and
Richard Carr, both of Sevierville, Tennessee.
