My father wrote this to me when I presented him with the above info. He is Avery Jay Ownby born in Oklahoma, son of Wayne, son of Avery Jesse Ownby who we show a direct male line back through to John Ownby builder of the cabin and on back to Arthur Ownby arrival Virginia. Here is what he says.........
I guess I can't quite reconcile this info with what I know (and don't know) about the cabin. My Grandpa (Avery Jesse) moved his family to Oklahoma from Tennessee after my dad was born in Tennessee (1908) and before Uncle Hugh was born in Oklahoma (1914). Could be they lived in the cabin after John left and maybe Cuberston moved in after they had gone. I don't know how long they lived there, but they were there when their first three children were born – Canova, who died (in Oklahoma I think) at about 14; my dad, who looked 3-4 years old in a picture taken in Gatlinburg; and Ben who died while still a baby
We visited Gatlinburg sometime in the late 40s and Grandpa's and Granny's relatives in Tennessee had told my dad that the cabin was still there. He looked for it but couldn't find it (there was no nature trail leading to it then; I think it hadn't been restored yet). Then when Steve and I saw it for the first time and took pictures back to Shawnee and showed them to Granny Ownby she recognized it immediately and asked "where's the kitchen?" The kitchen was never mentioned in the brochures until years later when some foundation stones were identified. The kitchen was on the other side of the cabin from this view, and there was a porch on this side. Granny told me about one thing that should still be there, even if it hadn't been restored – the spring. She told me where to find it the next time I visited there. I found it easily, just as she described it; it's still there, still running. There was a small pit lined with rocks that the spring fed into. The spring water is cold, and that's where they kept their milk. The cabin is on Fighting Creek. My grandpa told me many stories about life there, and always talked about "Fightin' Creek". They never talked about who built the cabin, or who had lived in it before they did.
