Daisy Whaley Henry of the Beaverdale community passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013, at the age of 102.
Born in Whitfield County to Silas and Martha Whaley on Sept. 29, 1910, Mrs. Henry was predeceased by her parents; sister, Julie Taylor; brother, Barton Whaley ; husband, Dane Walter Henry ; dear friend and stepmother-in-law, Mary Langford Henry ; granddaughter, Melissa Young; and grandson, Kenneth Burt.
Mrs. Henry is survived by her 12 children, Martha Young, James Henry and wife Faye, Terry Henry and wife Charlene of Chatsworth, Rossie Ann Henry , Lamarr Henry and wife Betty, Sherry Hayes and husband Thomas of Beaverdale, Lillian Burt of Smyrna, Doris Black and husband David of Chamblee, Markay Wiley and Patricia West of Decatur, Paul Henry and wife Elizabeth of Temecula, Calif., and Waymond Henry and wife Barbara of Cumming. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren whom she greatly treasured, Susan Dollar, Jennifer Sluder, Laurie Johnson, Connie Winkler, Karen Burt, Carol Hood, Diane Bishop, Marissa Henry , Greg Henry , Michelle McCann, Christina Downs, Jeanina Radford, Rick Wiley, Kevin Henry , Lisa Edwards, Dane Waymond Henry , Steven Henry , Paige West, Dane West Henry , Margaret Henry , Brandon Henry , Andrea Henry , Rhonda Hayes and Joseph Hayes; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Henry attended Mount Pleasant, Tucker and Deep Springs schools in Whitfield County and she was a member of Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She married Dane Walter Henry on Aug. 26, 1928, and thereafter made her home on the Henry Georgia Centennial Family Farm in Beaverdale. She worked some years in the carpet industry, but her life was truly devoted to her family and home. Adored by her children and grandchildren, Daisy Henry had a way of instilling in each child's heart the knowledge that he or she was the most special child of all. When one little boy hung an awkward cluster of ornaments on the Christmas tree, she kept them there throughout the Yule season. Every little Bible school project and handmade Mother's Day gift was displayed with great ceremony. Among her most prized possessions are small rocks collected from the roadside, baskets, baldheaded baby dolls, odd bits and pieces and other treasures loved at one time by children who entrusted them to her care.
She will be remembered too for her abiding interest in the world beyond Murray County. She read voraciously — The New York Times, National Geographic, magazines and novels of all types. She stayed current with politics and world events and knew something about many things. She could turn a basket of homegrown vegetables into a fabulous, nourishing soup, and she could bake the best fruit cobbler you ever ate. She loved adventure. In her early 80s, she flew alone to Europe to visit a military son and his family, and she traveled throughout the continent, making friends in every lace shop, antique market and candy store she entered.
In October 2010, more than 100 of Mrs. Henry 's friends and family celebrated her 100th birthday with a big party at Northwest School. She was proud of reaching this milestone. Although not ill, she hadn't been feeling real well in recent months. But the celebration beckoned. Plans were made, invitations were sent, and cakes — many cakes — were baked. She rose to the occasion, and she was truly Queen for a Day. Memories of that special day will bolster those left to mourn her.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Dr. Glenn Brister officiating.
Mrs. Henry will lie in state at the church from noon until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Monday.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home of Chatsworth.
