He was a retired carpenter. He served in the Navy during World War II, and in the Marines during the Korean War. He was a Protestant. Survivors include his wife, Pax Howard- Whaley, Sevierville, Tenn.; two brothers, John W., Knoxville, Tenn., and Alvin, Seminole; and four sisters, Inger Allen and Kathy Deitz, both of Seminole, Eva Henry, Satellite Beach, and Trula Bull, Knoxville.
