50 Years - Bobby and Mary Buckner Maddron
-By Janice Casey
Bobby Maddron was raised in the Rankin Hill community by his grandmother, Sally Brady. Mary grew up in the Carson Springs area and was raised by her grandparents, John and Ida Buckner.
They went to Edgemont Elementary School, and that is where Mary first saw Bobby. She immediately knew that he was for her, but they did not officially meet until she and her grandmother moved into a small house that Bobby owned to help take care of his grandmother. They immediately liked each other ,and in 1961, they began dating. Most dates were to the drive-in movies; “That's all there was to do,” Bobby states. In fact, they were at a movie at the Newport Drive-In when he asked her to marry him, and she accepted with no hesitation.
Bobby and Mary were married on March 12, 1962 at the Cocke County Court House by Rev. Roy Cutshall. Bobby's mother attended the wedding. They didn't have a "real" honeymoon – they went camping.
When they returned, they moved into the house where Bobby was born. They still live in that neighborhood only in a different house. He worked at Stokely Van-Camp. Later he worked at American Enka and stayed there for 31 years until it closed. Then he and his son-in-law went into the heat and air business. Mary was a stay at home mom.
The Maddrons are the parents of two children, Lori (Jeff) Smith and Bobby (Diane) Maddron. The loves of their lives are their grandchildren, Megan, age 16 and Dylan, who is eleven. They also have extended "adopted" families, Alex and Valentina Ryzhkov and Johnny and Angie Chapman.
These days their lives have fallen into a pleasant routine that begins in the morning when their neighbor comes over to drink coffee and watch the deer and turkeys from the Maddron's back porch . Bob has his very own man cave where he keeps his computers and music. Both are devoted to their community, which they say is very friendly and neighbors are more like family. Everyone watches out for each other. But most of all, they still enjoy spending time together. Not only are they a married couple…they are best friends. For their 50th anniversary, they had a cook out attended by family and friends.
If a young couple came to the Maddrons and asked what is the key to a long and happy marriage, Bobby would tell them, "Understand each other. Listen to each other. Talk to each other. Be friends." Mary echoes his sentiments and adds, "Talk over major decisions and make them together."
We are honored to sponsor Bobby and Mary Maddron as the Golden Couple for September.
