Hubert Black, 73, of 420 Mint Way, Newport, died unexpectedly early Monday morning.
He was a retired Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) administrator and inspector and Cosby native.
Mr. Black was one five children born to Willie J. and Arline (Caton) Black, of Cosby. He graduated from Cosby High School and entered a technical school in Knoxville to study radio and electronics.
After graduation, he entered the Army Air Corp as a radio operator and served a tour of duty in Alaska before returning to the states.
He married the former Alma Rene Allen, and they had two daughters, Sandie and Linda. The family lived in several states because he worked at various FAA assignments in the US until his final office in Miami at the Miami International Airport where he was chief administrator for all commercial flights to South America.
His job often required him to travel extensively throughout the world, including Asia, Europe, and South America to investigate commercial airline crashes. During a career that spanned 30 years he investigated some of the most tragic airline disasters of the twentieth century. He was a member of the FAA team that investigated the United Airlines crash near Parrottsville in the early 1960s.
When he retired, he and his wife returned to their mountain home about 1988. She preceded him in death several years ago.
Among the things that he enjoyed were his grandson, Evan Grahm Sanders, a Cosby School student, his church family at Garver’s Chapel Church, photography, helping children and youth.
Mr. Black was an avid amateur photographer who often volunteered to photograph sporting events at Cosby School for the Newport Plain Talk and often shared his photos with the athletes and their parents. He most recently attended all the Cosby girl’s softball games and traveled with the team in its bid for a state title at Chattanooga to assist Plain Talk Sports Editor Jim Harvin. After this he was invited and looked forward to the annual sports banquet. He never missed attending one of his grandson’s soccer games.
A sister, Lucy Owenby, of Cosby, and brother, Abe Black, of California, and their parents preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Earl Ownby, of New Market.
Mr. Black is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Mark and Linda Sanders; David and Sandie Popiel, all of Newport; grandson, Evan Sanders; sister, Reba Ownby, of New Market; Brother and sister-in-law, Creed and Margie Black, of Arlington, Washington; sister-in-law, Jane Black, of California; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight, Tuesday, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home Chapel.
Garver’s Chapel pastor Gary Henderson will officiate along with former pastor Phillip Hall.
Pallbearers will be Hollis Allen, Lloyd Bryant, Herb Cureton, Eddie Surber, Bruce Baxter, Walt Grooms, Tony Phillips, E. C. Baxter, and Monk Webb.
The funeral will be on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Manes with burial to follow in Union Cemetery.
