Community leader Joe Ingram dies at 62
By Charlotte Underwood | charlotteu@thedailytimes.com
Joe S. Ingram, a Blount County community pillar, died Saturday at age 62 after battling carcinoid cancer for more than 18 years.
An active civic leader, Ingram will be remembered for many things but family was his first priority, United Way of Blount County President and CEO Michelle Hankes wrote in a letter to the editor published in The Daily Times on Aug. 17.
“First and foremost, he is a family man. He and his wife, Teresa, have raised two beautiful daughters ... The closeness and love shared in that family is obvious to anyone who meets them,” Hankes wrote.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service with interment at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Grandview Cemetery.
A 1966 graduate of Alcoa High School and a 1970 graduate of the University of Tennessee, Ingram was a CPA and a partner in the accounting firm of Ingram, Overholt & Bean.
He was active in multiple community and civic-minded organizations such as Jaycees. He was a past president of Kiwanis and on the board of directors of Foothills Bank & Trust.
“When Joe was active in something, he was active in something,” former Maryville Mayor Steve West said Sunday.
Hankes remembered when Ingram led the United Way as campaign chair and dressed up as “U Man” in order to inspire the rest of the volunteers.
“It must have worked! The goal was reached and history made,” Hankes wrote.
Ingram was also involved in the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, the Blount Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Boy Scouts.
“If anything needed done, he was there to do it,” West said, recalling Ingram’s community activities.
West recalled Ingram as a car enthusiast.
“He loved cars, just loved them and collected different ones,” West said.
Many will remember Ingram for his business sense, according to the former Maryville mayor.
“He was probably the best-known accountant in all of Blount County. He and his firm did a lot with nonprofit organizations and helped a lot of people in the community,” West said.
Hankes cited Ingram as a “power within the business community,” stating that Ingram’s was the first and last name in integrity in the accounting field.
He was “a role model for many of his peers,” Hankes wrote, and added that she saw Ingram as a “tried and true” leader and Blount County “treasure.”
Ingram also was church treasurer at Broadway Baptist Church for more than 30 years and a member of the Gideons.
West said he will always remember Ingram as the kind, active and caring person that he was.
“He was just a great guy who always wanted to help make Blount County a better place,” West said.
