TELLICO LAKE (WATE) -- Three days and nights of searching ended Saturday on Tellico Lake when crews found a Maryville fisherman's body.
Gary Lindsey, 22, was reported missing Wednesday night when his empty boat was discovered on Tellico Lake in Monroe County with the motor still running.
His body was found around 3:45 Saturday afternoon in about 30 feet of water near the Highway 411 bridge in Vonore. Search crews were using underwater sonar at the time.
"We conducted this as a search and rescue operation. Our thoughts, our prayers, were that we would be able to locate Mr. Lindsey injured on shore. We were hoping for the best and planning for the worst," says Vonore Police Chief John Hines.
The chief doesn't suspect foul play, but he can only venture a guess as to how the champion fisherman and experienced boater ended up in the water.
"We believe he was checking the area for fishing spots for future tournaments. He was on the boat alone, so between piloting the boat and him using his fish-finding sonar gear, we think that perhaps he was distracted," Hines says.
Rebekah Pipkins is a friend who was at the search scene all day Saturday to offer her support as the family waited for news.
"I just wanted to be here in any way I could to help out, to let them know they have people praying for them and loving them, so they know they have people who are here for whatever they need," she says.
She was there when search crews made the discovery.
"I just felt really heartbroken. He was a great guy. He was so fun to talk to and just so loving and warm-hearted and a great person," Pipkins says.
Gary Lindsey's aunt tells 6 News her nephew was always happy, had a passion for life and loved his friends and family.
Thirty local and regional agencies helped with the search, using planes, boats, divers, crews on foot and search dogs.

VONORE - Dozens of emergency workers this morning resumed searching for a missing 22-year-old Maryville man whose boat and truck were found Wednesday night along Tellico Lake.
Gary Lindsey had gone boating Wednesday evening after he got off work in search of fishing spots in preparation for a fishing tournament this weekend, said Blount County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Marian O'Briant.
At 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, a passerby noted Lindsey's unattended boat floating under the U.S. Highway 411 bridge over Tellico Lake and alerted authorities.
A search through the night was fruitless, but dozens of emergency personnel from 14 agencies in Blount, Monroe and Loudon counties have joined the search today, O'Briant said.
The search this morning centers on the area where the Little Tennessee River enters Tellico Lake, she said.
Lindsey's relatives also are on the scene, O'Briant said.

Missing boater's body found

VONORE, Tenn. - Searchers today found the body of the man who disappeared this week while fishing on Tellico Lake.
A drag line snagged the body of Gary S. Lindsey, 22, who disappeared while fishing Wednesday night at the junction of the Little Tennessee River and the lake, Blount County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Marian O'Briant said. Crews recovered the body around 3:45 p.m., she said.
The body was floating in about 30 feet of water just off U.S. Highway 411 South between the posts of a railroad trestle. It showed no signs of foul play, and boat speed didn't appear to be a factor in his death, O'Briant said.
Divers with the Blount Special Operations Response Team, as well as divers with Monroe County Sheriff's Office, had spent the past three days searching the lake.
At 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, a passerby noted Lindsey's unattended boat floating under the U.S. Highway 411 bridge and alerted authorities.
