(December 12, 1934 - September 24, 2015)
U.S. Veteran Jack Arthur Briggs, age 80, of Newport, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015. He was a graduate of Cocke County High School in 1952 and attended TMI in Cookeville for one year. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and was a Korean War veteran. While in the Navy, his jobs were those of pilot and cryptologist. Following his discharge from the service, he returned to Newport and joined his father, Joe Briggs, in the operation of Briggs Body Shop, which opened in 1954. In 1983, his son Blake came into the business which continues to operate today. A dedicated family man, he felt blessed to have enjoyed two great loves in his life, to his first wife, Patsy Campbell Briggs, whom he married in 1958, and the mother of his son, and, following her death, to his second wife, Ann Overholt Smith, whom he married in 2011. He greatly enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, and making friends wherever he went, and will be remembered for his quick wit, cheerful disposition, and pride in his family. He was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Marjorie (Taylor) Briggs. In addition to his wife Ann, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Blake and Patti Briggs, grandchildren Adam and Zach Briggs, step-daughter and her husband Jennifer and Brian Eisenhower, step-grandson McKinley Eisenhower, and many other family and friends. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015, in Union Cemetery with Dr. Rich Lloyd officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
