Ida Mae Messer Proffitt Ray,passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at the Jefferson Couonty Nursing Home. Ida Ray was born on May 6, 1912 in the Greenbriar Community of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. At an early age she became deaf. She attended the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville, Tennessee and became a Christian at an early age and attended a Baptist church for the deaf in Johnson City, Tennessee. She was an excellent seamstress, craftswoman and quilter. She was a loving and kind mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Preceded in death by her husbands, James Horace Proffitt and Cecil Ray; daughter, Pearl Proffitt; step-son, Estelly Proffitt; parents, John and Lucy (Whaley) Messer; sister, Lenore (Messer) Whaley; brothers, Robert Perry, James Isaac (Jimmy) and David Soloman Messer. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John Lee and Carolyn Proffitt, Raymond and Ann Proffitt; daughters, Lillian Massengill and Ethel Shelton; daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Leonard Cos; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; special cousins, Bruce and Jennie Belle Messer and special caregiver, Darlene Boling. The family wishes to thank the special care and support of Housecall Home Healthcare and the Jefferson County Nursing Home. We would like to invite family and friends to celebrate her going to her hew home, Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home in Dandridge, Tn. Burial will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Swanns Chapel Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. prior to services at Farrar Funeral Home in Dandridge, TN.
