Hugh Clay Whaley was my grandmother, Ruth Whaley's, brother. The story of his death so young (7 months) was that the milk cow ate some spring onions during grazing and that it gave the baby dlarrhea that led to dehydration that led to death. One thing I learned from your site is his name and that it was Laura King's first child. In the many times that I heard this story, I never remembered his name or birth order. Thank you for that.:)
P.S. My sister is named after Laura King (now Hamilton) and also has in her home the corner cabinet that Pinkney made for Laura as a wedding present.
