BLACKBURN, JUDGE THOMAS M. (T. MACK) - 91, of Athens, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee the son of the late Thomas M. and Cassandra Saffell Blackburn. He was a life member of the Presbyterian Church with his present membership in the Mars Hill Presbyterian Church in Athens. For 54 years he was a ruling elder and was seven times elected a Commissioner to the church's General Assembly. He was the Moderator for two terms of the Middle Tennessee Presbytery. In 1958 he was the National President of the Men of the Church and was a member of the Church's Mission Board for 5 years. Judge Blackburn attended the Knoxville City Schools and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1938. He attended Syracuse University and the Chicago Musical College where he studied the Violin. World War II interrupted his musical career and following the end of hostilities, he pursued a legal career. During World War II, Blackburn was a dive bomber pilot in the Marine Corps and served two tours of duty overseas. He received several medals of valor including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He achieved the rank of Major. Judge Blackburn was a lawyer having graduated from the University of Tennessee, College of Law. He served as an Assistant District Attorney and as the Director of Law for the City of Knoxville. He was elected Chancellor of the Chancery Court in Knox County. In 1964 the Supreme Court of Tennessee appointed him the court's Executive Secretary to administer the court system of Tennessee. He was designated a Special Judge on the Supreme Court and also served as Judge on each of the three Divisions of Court of Appeals. Following his judicial retirement, he was elected Mayor of Brentwood, Tennessee. He was a lifetime member of the American Rose Society and served for 12 years on the Board of Directors. Blackburn was an avid rose grower and was an accredited rose judge and consulting rosarian. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mabeth Kellow Blackburn; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Hal Buttram; one son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Nancy Blackburn, all of Athens; one brother, Hugh Blackburn of Kentucky; five grandchildren, Lt. Colonel Greg H. Buttram, Ashley Buttram Barksdale, Laura Ellen Buttram, Cassie Blackburn Soule and Staff Sgt. Thomas P. Blackburn; seven great grandchildren, Katie and Mack Buttram, Emily and Caroline Barksdale, and Micah, Matthew and Daniel Soule. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Leslie Rust presiding. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 28, 2011, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Smith Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, 205 N. Jackson Street, Athens, Tennessee 37303 or to The American Rose Society, P.O. Box 30000, Shreveport, LA 71130.
