MATTHEWS, LISA GAINES - age 56, of Knoxville, Tennessee, lost her nine year battle with MS on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at her home in Knoxville. The daughter of Else J. and William E. Matthews of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Lisa was born in Washington, D. C. in 1954. A graduate of Shelbyville High School (1972), she received her B. A. in History from Tulane University in 1976, and her M.A. in History from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) in 1982. She retired as an area manager with Pizza Hut. Additionally, she was a former instructor in history at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her daughter, Dr. Laura Griffith Reynolds (Dr. Drew Reynolds), of Memphis, TN; two grandchildren, Archer David and Palmer Ellen Reynolds; three siblings, William (Beau) Matthews (Sylvia), of Columbia, SC, Ellen Baxter Oetinger (Peter) of Wallingford, PA, and Bland Ballard Matthews (Marci) of Louisville, KY; and friend of many years, Phyllis Davis, who was her devoted caregiver.
