Cosby senior planning coat drive
Author: Duay O'Neil
COSBY-A Cosby High School senior's memory of a child shivering in the cold has prompted her to organize a Coat Drive.
Wendy McGaha said, "I was in eighth grade and a little kindergarten student only had on a thin dress and flip flops-no jacket or anything-and it was so cold. That image has remained with me.
"I'm fortunate and blessed to have what I have and I want to help those who don't," she added.
With that in mind, Wendy is organizing a drive to collect coats, scarves, mittens, toboggans, and jackets for distribution the week before Halloween.
She plans to contact the principals of Smoky Mountain, Grassy Fork, Bridgeport, and Cosby Elementary School to ask for help in identifying those in need.
“Anything for children will be welcome,” she continued, “and older siblings as well.”
Wendy, who graduated from Grassy Fork Elementary, is the daughter of Chipper and Teresa McGaha of Hartford. Following her graduation from Cosby next May, she hopes to enter the University of Tennessee with an ultimate goal of a career in the medical field.
Anyone wanting more information about the project or having items to contribute may contact Wendy at 423-487-5647. “You may leave a message,” she said, “and we’ll schedule a pick-up of items. Or you may drop off items at Cosby High. Mrs. (Tina) Williamson will hold the items in her room.”

COSBY—Wendy McGaha’s project to collect coats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, and related clothing items to share with families in need is well underway.
Prompted by her memory of seeing a small child shivering in the cold, Wendy especially wants to help young children and their older siblings.
“I was in eighth grade and saw a little kindergarten child in only a thin dress and flip-flops shivering in the cold,” McGaha explained. “She didn’t have a jacket or anything, and it was so cold. I’ve never forgotten that.”
For several weeks, Wendy has been collecting clothing items and hopes to distribute them the week before Halloween.
A graduate of Grassy Fork Elementary and now a senior at Cosby High School, she is the daughter of Chipper and Teresa McGaha of Hartford.
Following graduation, she hopes to enter the University of Tennessee with a goal of a career in the medical field.
Anyone wanting more information about the project and having items to contribute may contact Wendy at 423-487-5647. “You may leave a message,” she said, “and we’ll schedule a pick-up of items. Or you may drop them off at Cosby High School.”
“I’m fortunate and blessed to have what I have,” she concluded, “and I want to help those who don’t.”
