• Notes

  Joseph McCarter was listed in the 1860 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Tennesee. He was married twice and had children by both marriages. Family tradition says that he came with his brother, James McCarter from South Carolina to East Tennessee, probably with the Ogle clan from Edgefield County, South Carolina. He lived in Jefferson, Knox, and Monroe Counties, Tennessee.
