UPTON , LEX , JR. - age 79 of Sweetwater, entered eternal rest at 7:20 p.m. Mon. Feb. 14, 2000 at Wood Presbyterian Home in Sweetwater. Lex retired in 1981 after 30 years as head chef at Hall's Restaurant, Sweetwater. He was preceded in death by parents, Lex Upton , Sr., & Mary Scruggs Upton ; 7 brothers; 4 sisters. Survivors: Mildred Melton Upton , devoted wife of 58 years; sons, Rev. James H. & Marianne, Sweetwater, Ronald H. & Almeda, Nashville, Lester R. & Valerie, Knoxville, Dennis R. & Betty, Knoxville, George E. & Gladys, Orlando, Fla; daughters, Dr. Margaret Blackshear (Julian) Nashville, Cynthia Harrison, Knoxville, Audrey Cox (Michael), Nashville; brothers & sisters, Ray and (Dot) Upton , Charlene Homes, Grand Rapids, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren & a host of nieces & nephews; sisters in law, Johnnie Upton & Nellie Upton , Madisonville, Bettie Beatty, Knoxville. The family wishes to acknowledge special friends, Claude Thompson & Douglas Upton . Lex faithfully served as elder at North Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 27 years before joining Sweetwater Bible Church where he served as Elder & Treasurer until his death. In 1991, the Tenn. Black Caucus awarded Lex & Mildred the "Tenn. Family of the Year" Award in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Lex will be lovingly remembered as a devout Christian, a kind father, a gentle man whose joy in life was encouraging his kids & growing vegetables on his farm. Family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Fri. Feb. 18, 2000 at Kykers Funeral Home in Sweetwater. Funeral service is to follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. J.C. Upton & Rev. John McElhaney officiating. Interment is in North Point Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society. Sweetwater Memory Chapel in charge.
