Mr. Luther Bartley Cassell , age 93 , passed away Friday , January 15 , 2016 , at his home .
Born June 30, 1922, in Newport, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Thomas J. Cassell and Glennie Dearing Cassell .
During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army in November of 1942 and served as a messenger between Battalion Headquarters and the companies of the 104th Infantry Division, "The Timberwolves." He served 195 days on the frontline in Northwestern Europe until the end of the war in 1945.
An electrician by trade, he worked for Wall Tube and Metal Products for 27 years until his retirement in June of 1982.
Survivors include two children Linda Cassell Huth and Lois Richter Odom, both of North Carolina, five grandchildren Brian Davis, Scott Davis, Lance Richter, Alicia Richter Fink, and C.J. Odom, and six great-grandchildren Jessica Davis, Landi Fink, Bryson Fink, Benjamin Richter, Joseph Richter, and Alexis Richter.
In addition, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby VanDyke Cassell , his brothers Cecil Cassell , George Balch, and Harley Balch, and his sisters Beatrice Jones and Ruby Croft.
A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers and due to his love of all animals, donations may be made to Dr. Carol Hood Memorial Animal Shelter.
