U.S. Veteran Ralph Leon Jones, passed from this world, on April 18, 2011, following a lengthy illness, and has gone home to be with the Lord. Mr. Jones, age 93, was born on October 12, 1917. He was preceded in death, by his loving wife Beatrice Cassell Jones, parents, Hugh and Cordie Day Jones, and daughter, Barbara Jo Hartsell Dunn. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Cathy Jones, and by his son-in-law, Charles O. Dunn. He leaves four grandchildren, Bradley R. Jones and wife Jacqulyn, Seth M. Jones, Trena Parks and husband Jimmy, and Tyler Dunn. He also leaves his brother-in-law, L. B. Cassell and several nieces and nephews. A veteran, he was in the U. S. Navy from November 1, 1942 to October 30, 1945. He served as a Seabee, Machinist 3rd Class, as part of the 91st U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, building Airport runways and buildings, in New Guinea and the Phillipines, during World War II. He retired from the United States Postal Service, in 1972. He later worked for Merchant and Planters Bank for several years, greeting and parking customers in the Broadway Lot. Mr. Jones was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, and until recently attended Travis Balls’ Sunday School Class. Before his illness, he was an avid gardener, and enjoyed sharing the results with his friends. He was also known for making some of the best peanut butter fudge in town, and it was coveted by those who knew him. He will be dearly missed by his family, neighbors and friends. The family will receive friends at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, on Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 pm, with Dr. Charlie Boggan and Dr. Rich Lloyd officiating. Family and friends are invited to meet at Union Cemetery, on Friday, April 22, 2011, at 11:00 am for the interment. Honorary pallbearers are: Travis Ball, Johnny Burnett, Bobby Hurst, Harold Hurst, Herb Hurst, Charlie Kickliter, Arthur Styles and Jackie Styles. The family would like to give special thanks to Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, employees and volunteers: Tammy Francis, Dr, Jim Williams, Sheila, Bessie, Lauren, Vera, Seprina and Jimmy, and caregivers Vickie and Sally.
