Knox school pays tribute to 16-year-old girl killed in crash
KNOXVILLE - The principal of a North Knoxville school paid tribute today to a 16-year-old student who died in a single-vehicle crash this morning in South Knoxville.
Felicia Hicks, 16, was traveling east on Gov. John Sevier Highway near Norton Road when she lost control on a curve at 8:19 a.m., according to Knox County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Ashley Haynes.
Hicks was driving a 2002 Nissan Maxima that left the road, and overturned when it struck a ditch. Hicks was ejected as the vehicle flipped, Haynes said.
Hicks was declared dead upon arrival at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
While the Sheriff's Office this morning reported Hicks attended South-Doyle High School, Knox County Schools spokeswoman Melissa Copelan said the teen had been assigned to a different facility last year.
Hicks in November 2010 was moved from South-Doyle to the Richard Yoakley School, 4415 Washington Pike, Copelan said.
Tom Watson, principal of the Richard Yoakley School, issued a statement about Hicks and extending the administration's prayers to Hicks' family.
"Today was a sad day at Richard Yoakley School," Watson said. "Felicia was a wonderful young lady, who was a joy to have in school. She was always smiling and had a great personality. She was loved by staff and students."
The Richard Yoakley School offers a "unique alternate program" to help students in the areas of behavior or academics to "enable students to learn acceptable skills so they may return to their home schools," according to the school's website.
Copelan said school officials have dispatched counselors to both South-Doyle and Richard Yoakley to console Hicks' friends.
More details as they develop online and in Friday's News Sentinel.
