  William Shields immigrated from Ireland to New Castle, Delaware and settled in Frederick County, Maryland. William Shields had a large family according to a letter written by a near relative, William Hathaway, in 1790. One descendant, John Knight Shields, was born 15 August 1858, Clinchdale, Tennessee and served as U. S. Senator and Justice of the Supreme Court of Tennessee.
