Welch, Hugh V. (Long Tom) – age 91 of Knoxville passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at his home. Member of the Baptist faith and the International Union of Operating Engineers-Local 917. Retired from Rust Engineers of Oak Ridge and formerly employed by Metler Crane Erection. Army veteran of World War II. Reared by and preceded in death by grandparents, John and Minnie Welch. Also preceded in death by first wife, Fran Welch; mother, Cora Weaver; sisters, Mae Stallcup and Sevina Flanagin; brothers, Arthur, Luther V. and Theodore Welch; step-great grandson, Tim; and sister-in-law, Rella Welch. Survived by wife of 30 years, Ella Green Welch; children, Lloyd and Peg Welch of Dandridge, Brenda Gail and Charles McGhee (deceased) of Pioneer; stepchildren, Carlene and Richard Johnson of Church Hill, Doris Campbell, Rose and Scott Manley of Knoxville, Ned and Cindy Campbell of Knoxville; brothers, Kelso and Louise Weaver, Don Weaver of Knoxville, Herb and Margaret Weaver of Georgia, and Cliff and Wanda Weaver of Oak Ridge; sisters, Ruth Surette of Knoxville and Dixie and Al Marceau of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Virgie Welch of Seymour; 5 grandchildren, Dean, Wendy, Angela, Jessica and Amanda; 8 step-grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 17 step-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends. A big thank you to his many doctors and staff for the good care given to him. Also, to all of the professionals who allowed him to remain at home, including ProCase Management and Amedysis Hospice. Donations may be made to New Canaan Baptist Church, PO Box 2, Pioneer, TN 37847. Funeral services will be 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Bridges Funeral Home with Rev. Adam Hunley officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home and proceed to Highland Memorial Cemetery for an 11:00 AM burial. Pallbearers: grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers: John Bryant and Cliff Weaver. Military honors will be provided by East TN Veteran Honor Guard. Family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike, 865-523-4999.
