PONDER , TERRELL - 77, 1603 E. Unaka Ave. Johnson City died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center Nursing Home following a brief illness. Mr. Ponder was a native of White Pine, Tenn. and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1942. He was a son of the late James Grayson and Mary Katherine Herndon Ponder . Mr. Ponder began his education career as a teacher and all sports coach at Jefferson County High School, Dandridge. His career began in Johnson City in 1949 where he was a drafting teacher at Science Hill High School. He later became principal of Columbus Powell Elementary School. He continued his work in education as Director of Elementary Education, Assistant Superintendent of JohnsonCity Schools and also served as Superintendent of Johnson City Schools from 1974 to 1978. During his career he was instrumental in initiating kindergarten system in the Johnson City School System. Mr. Ponder then was named Director of Special Education and in 1985 was awarded State Special Educator of the Year by the Effective Advocacy for Citizens with Handicaps group. He served on the board of the Dawn of Hope during its initial start-up and was former president of the Watauga Area Mental Health where he formerly served on the board of directors. In the late 1960's Mr. Ponder served as president of the American League of the Johnson City Little League. Mr. Ponder received his BS degree from East Tennessee State College in 1947 with majors in Social Studies and Industrial Arts. He was also a member of the baseball team. In 1951 he received his masters degree from George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville with majors in School Administration, Health and Physical Education. He has earned additional graduate credit at Vanderbilt University, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and East Tennessee State University. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a member of the William Rigell Sunday School Class and was heavily involved in church activities. Mr. Ponder was a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Ponder in 1999. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Rowe Ponder ; five sons, Terry Ponder , Brian Ponder and Mark Ponder , all of Johnson City, Chris Ponder , Atlanta, Keith Ponder , Jonesborough; two daughters, Cheryl Herr, Knoxville, Jan Ponder , Johnson City; two brothers, Truman Ponder , Baltimore, MD., Herschel Ponder , Charlotte, NC.; one sister, Marion Thomas, White Pine, Tenn.; ten grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 25, 2000 at 2 p.m. in Central Baptist Church, Johnson City. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park, Johnson City. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30-9 p.m. in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home.
