McKenry, owner of Century Farm in Walland, dead at 94
By Joel Davis | (joeld@thedailytimes.com)
Robert R. McKenry Sr. died Monday at his home on the 168-year-old family farm in Walland where he had been born on June 28, 1918. He was 94.
In 2006, the Center for Historic Preservation and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture designated the McKenry Farm a “Century Farm.” It was founded in 1845.
The Century Farm program started in 1976 as part of the nation’s bicentennial celebration. The program recognizes farms in Tennessee that have been in continuous operation for more than 100 years.
McKenry’s great-grandfather, Samuel McMurray McKenry, founded the 166-acre farm in 1845. According to the family’s records, “a team of horses ran away with Samuel” and he died shortly thereafter.
In 1915, Samuel’s son, Ed McKenry, acquired the farm, rented it out in exchange for a portion of the harvest profits, and moved to Knoxville to work at the S.E. & Son store.
Robert McKenry moved to Knoxville when he was 6, and worked at his family’s store, which sold eggs, poultry and barrels of butter to local bakeries and residents. He worked there until he was 18 and then moved back to the farm.
Ed’s son, Guy McKenry, became the third generation of the McKenry family to own and operate the farm. He diversified and eventually the farm milked 155 cows, produced vegetables, tobacco, chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, beef cattle, corn, hay and raised horses.
In 1951, Robert McKenry took over the land, living in the farmhouse where he, his father and his grandfather were born.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith West Chapel with interment following at Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
