Michael Von Smith, age 48, of Newport, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 16, 2003. He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. Michael was an avid sportsman, coached little league, and was a member of Smokey Mountain Country Club. He was a member of Newport Masonic Lodge 234 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 25 years. Preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Lee Smith; foster sister, Gail Holt; grandparents, Jessie Bible, Shade Wise, Eldy and Lola Nease Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie Hemminger Smith, of Newport; sons, Trevor and Kreg Smith, of Newport; parents, Von and Carolyn Smith, of Bybee; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gail and Patricia Hemminger, of Newport; aunt, Emma Hill, of Newport; and great-aunts, Mable Fowler, of Parrottsville, and Josephine Emmitt, of N.C. Funeral services were held 8:00 p.m. Monday at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Craig Ward officiating, with burial 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in Union Cemetery.
