A proud native of Sevier County, she was born September 5, 1921 to the late Wiley Bates and Rhoda Ellen Roberts King. Mrs. Proffitt’s family, friends and church family were very important to her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Proffitt is preceded in death by her husband John Luther Proffitt, son, Philip Kenneth Proffitt, brother Wiley Bates King, Jr. and sister Jessie Ellen King Mize. She was a member of Sevierville Church of Christ for 70 years. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law James Luther and Rue Proffitt, Wiley Gene and Shirley Proffitt, Barbara Sue Proffitt; daughter and son-in-law Shirley Ann (Proffitt) and Gary E. McKnight; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 AM Wednesday in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with John Daniels and Scott McKnight officiating. Interment will follow in Middle Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-6 PM Tuesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
