Adam Wise and Justin Householder would have graduated together next year.
They died a day apart this week after their car wrecked on a dirt road in rural southern Georgia. The boys, both 17, would have started their senior year at Bearden High School in Knoxville this fall.
"Any time you lose any students, any young people in the start of their life, it's a tragic event," Bearden High Principal John Bartlett said. "It's a tragedy for our school, for those parents and for our community."
Georgia State Patrol troopers still don't know for sure what caused the wreck Wednesday on a straight stretch of road in clear weather outside Tifton, Ga., GSP Sgt. Ron Warren said. Both teenagers wore seat belts, and troopers found no alcohol or drugs in the car, he said.
A reconstruction team hasn't determined whether speed might have played a role in the crash.
"Troopers are still investigating the cause," Warren said.
Friends said the boys had been headed to Florida.
Wise was driving a 2001 Nissan Maxima east on Adcock Road near Interstate 75 when he lost control of the car around 4:40 p.m., GSP Trooper Chris Whitley reported. The car ran off the road, flipped, hit a tree and caught fire.
Householder died at the scene. A helicopter transported Wise to South Georgia Medical Center in nearby Valdosta.
Wise was later sent to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla., where he died Thursday, Warren said.
Householder's family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Rose Mortuary's Mann Heritage Chapel in Knoxville, with services to follow. Funeral arrangements for Wise hadn't been set Thursday.

Teens on road trip before crash
Father says two were going to look at schools

Adam Wise and Justin Householder stopped for lunch on the drive to Florida and texted home to say everything was OK.
"They were taking a road trip," Wise's father, Kurt, said Friday. "The first stop was the East Coast. They were going to look at a couple of schools down there, and they were going to visit Adam's grandparents in Merritt Island (Florida) and his mother and half-brother outside St. Petersburg. It was their first time driving down."
They never made it. The 17-year-old friends, who would have graduated next year from Bearden High School in Knoxville, died a day apart after a crash Wednesday on a dirt road in South Georgia.
Georgia State Patrol troopers said they still don't know what caused the crash on Adcock Road outside Tifton or why the pair left Interstate 75 South for the rural spot where Wise's Nissan Maxima ran off the road, flipped and hit a tree around 4:40 p.m. Both were wearing seat belts, and troopers found no drugs or alcohol in the car.
Householder died at the scene, and Wise died a day later at a Florida hospital.
"We've not determined the speed or the cause yet, but they were obviously going too fast," GSP Cpl. Jeff Culpepper said. "Everything's still under investigation."
Wise's father said he's not sure he'll ever know all the answers.
"Adam was a cautious driver," the father said. "He had zero speeding tickets. He did not text and drive. He knew he'd lose the car in a heartbeat if he did that.
"I don't know why they were down there," he said. "Adam had GPS, so he knew he could get off the Interstate and then get back on. They'd made a joke about stopping at all the Goodwills all the way down. I haven't really put my focus on that yet."
The boys had been friends since their eighth-grade days at West Valley Middle School. That friendship took off in high school, Wise's father said.
"They really jelled together," he said.
"Anybody that met them loved them. They would play the drums, jam and horse around. Adam had a smart, grounded, mature view of the world - he was mentally mature but knew not to take life too seriously. He wasn't afraid of anything.
"Adam was a great brother, and his little brother Connor worshipped him. He said Adam wouldn't have to go to heaven alone."
Householder's family will receive friends today 2-4 p.m. at Rose Mortuary's Mann Heritage Chapel with services to follow.
Funeral arrangements for Wise remained incomplete Friday.
