Soon-to-be 7-year-old is ‘Christmas angel’
by ELLEN BROWN The Mountain Press
Lilly Denise Williams was born week early on Christmas Day, rather than on New Year’s Day when she was due.
Sabrina Williams expected to have a New Year’s Baby in 2004 — but instead she had a Christmas to remember in 2003.
“I was due Jan. 1, but I started to feel really yucky a few days before Christmas,” said Williams, who lives in Newport. “I felt so bad that I actually sat down to load the dishwasher. I ended up going into labor on Christmas Eve.”
At 8:30 a.m. the next day, Lillian (“Lilly”) Denise Williams was born.
It seemed fitting that her parents’ “pride and joy” was born on Christmas Day, but Sabrina says, “We knew she was going to be special no matter when she was born.”
Sabrina and Dennis Williams already had three children each when Lilly came along. Her brothers and sisters are now in their teens, 20s and 30s.
“My husband came up with her name: ‘Lillian’ is for her grandmother and ‘Denise’ is for her sister who passed away.”
A polite and pretty girl who loves to dress up, Lilly says, “I like sharing my birthday with God. I pray before everything, even before I open my presents.”
Each Christmas morning, the first-grader wakes up her parents to get the day started.
“It usually takes them a while,” she said.
After opening presents, they enjoy Christmas dinner — and then balloons go up and birthday cake is served.
“Everybody said, ‘You need to change her birthday, she’s going to get cheated,’” Sabrina said. “But I said, ‘No. Everybody’s already there (including aunt Virginia Hamm and grandmother Zeltha Williams, who live in Sevier County) to celebrate her birthday.’ It’s a long day, but it’s a fun day.”
Lilly loves having all of her family together on Christmas Day. Even before she knew the significance of her birthday, she knew it was a special time for everyone.
“When I was a baby, I thought all of the decorations (in my neighborhood and in town) were for me,” she said with a grin.
Favorite Christmas/birthday treats include turkey and chocolate cream pie, and favorite gifts have included an iPod and a guitar. This year, she’s hoping for a Boppit game and “bracelets that sound like jingle bells.”
“Music is her thing,” Sabrina said. “She loves to go see Elvis tribute artists.”
“Lou Vuto and Terry Turner are my favorites,” Lilly added.
She also enjoys “playing with my friends, making more friends, cheerleading and drawing.”
“She’s very appreciative and always wants to help others,” Sabrina said. “She told me that she wanted to raise money for the poor people and their children by selling apples. She also likes to play with her great-nephews, who are 3 and 1. She’ll get up at 5:30 a.m. and read to them before she goes to school.
“She has such a heart. We’ve always said she’s our Christmas angel.”
