MOORE , REVEREND DR. GLORIA S. - Pastor of Mt. Pleasant African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Rockford, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday evening, January 26, 2003 at U.T. Medical Center. She was also a practicing Attorney and the Founding Partner of the law firm, Moore & Clark, P.C. Dr. Moore was born January 31, 1947 to James Saffell and Marion (Saffell) Williamson. She grew up in Knoxville and was educated in Knoxville City Schools. She was a graduate of Fulton High School, Class of 1964, where she was an All-City Basketball Star. Dr. Moore was married to Rev. Churchill W. Moore , Sr. (Pastor of Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church, Knoxville). To that union, one child was born, Churchill W. Moore , Jr. Early in their marriage, Dr. Moore joined her husband as a member of Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church, where she retained a faithful membership until her passing. In 1972, Dr. Moore answered the call to ministry and began preaching at Greater Warner under the guidance of then Pastor Rev. James E. Brown, Sr. and presiding prelate. The Right Reverend Bishop Clinton R. Coleman. In 1975, she accepted her first pastoral duty at Medford Chapel AME Zion Church in Byington, Tennessee. She then went on to faithfully serve as Pastor of the Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church in Rockford, Tennessee for 26 years until her death. Dr. Moore was an ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church. She served on The National Board of The Department of Christian Education of The AME Zion Church and The Board of Admissions and Conference Examiners for The Tennessee Conference of The AME Zion Church. Dr. Moore traveled extensively around the country and to other parts of the world to promote the up building of God's kingdom through The AME Zion Church with fellow Zionites to include the late Mrs. Grace L. Holmes, Rev. Michael Ellis and Rev. Joel Miles. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville a Master of Divinity at Hood Theological Seminary at Salisbury, North Carolina and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at The University of Tennessee College of Law at Knoxville. Dr. Moore was Past Adjunct Business Law Professor at Knoxville College a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Nu Zeta Chapter and served on The Board of Directors of Haven House for Battered Women and Children. She also served as Chairperson of The Board of Directors for The Community Health Services Center. She was a member of The Advisory Board for The Knoxville Empowerment Zone and a member of The Knoxville Interdenominational Christian Ministerial Alliance serving the greater Knoxville area. She was currently pursuing her vision to develop The Renaissance Village which will include an assisted living facility for senior citizens and a community center where children and adults can meet for community cooperation and social concerns. She was preceded in death by her grandmother and grandfather, Elizabeth Cox and Solomon Cox mother and father-in-law, Eula and C. Everett Moore . She leaves to mourn her passing very devoted husband of thirty-nine years. Rev. Churchill W. Moore , Sr. devoted son, Churchill W. Moore , Jr. (whom she affectionately called "Chopper") and loving grandson, DeChryrian Moore mother and father, Marion (Saffell) Williamson and James Saffell, both of Knoxville, Tennessee sisters, Sherry Williamson and Jamesena Saffell brothers, James (Lisa) and Gregory (Donna) Williamson sisters-in-law, Sherwood (James) Davis Lavonia (Charles) Moore , LaFreda (Richard) Odom and Paula Newton, all of Knoxville, Tennessee aunt, Elizabeth Kennibrew uncle, Norman Cox very devoted friends, Andrea Mostella and Martha Scudder friend and law partner, Barbara Clark devoted niece, LeiAndrea Imes a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends in the Connectional Church as well as judges and attorneys across the state of Tennessee and the entire congregation of Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church and Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, c/o Patrick Brazan, 821 Brentwood Dr., Maryville, TN 37804. A very special thanks to Dr. David Moore , his staff and the staff at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Open visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Mount Pleasant AME Zion Church, 3664 Grade Road, Rockford, TN . The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church. Gloria S. Moore dies; was pastor and lawyer
The Rev. Dr. Gloria S. Moore , pastor of Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church of Rockford and a practicing lawyer, died Sunday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Mrs. Moore had been a minister for many years but had always wanted to study law.
"I never forgot about being a lawyer," Mrs. Moore said in a 1991 interview with the News-Sentinel, recalling how a conversation with a friend convinced her to pursue the dream.
"I said, 'I still want to be a lawyer, but by the time I get out, I'll be 44 years old,' " Mrs. Moore said. "She responded to me, 'Yes, but if you live and don't go to law school, you'll still be 44.' "
Moore attended UT's College of Law while pastoring her church. She graduated in 1991. She was a founding partner of Moore & Clark Attorneys.
Mrs. Moore was a native Knoxvillian. Besides her law degree, she had a bachelor's degree in religious studies from UT and a master of divinity from Hood Theological Seminar.
Before serving as pastor in the Rockford church, Mrs. Moore was minister at Medford Chapel AME Zion Church in Knoxville and was assistant pastor at Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church.
Mrs. Moore served on the National Board of the Department of Christian Education of the AME Zion Church and on the Board of Admissions and Conference Examiners for the Tennessee Conference of the AME Zion Church.
She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, served on the board of directors of Haven House for Battered Women and Children, chaired the board for Community Health Services Center, and was a member of the Advisory Board for Knoxville Empowerment Zone and a member of the Knoxville Interdenominational Christian Ministerial Alliance.
She also taught business law at Knoxville College.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Churchill W, Moore Sr. a son, Churchill W. Moore Jr. and one grandson.
