GATLINBURG (AP)-- A Virginia man was killed when he lost control of his car, which veered off a road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and plunged into a river. Claude Vernon Conley , 66, of Virginia Beach, Va., was pronounced dead Sunday at University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he was transported after the accident, park officials said Monday.
Authorities said alcohol was a possible factor in the one-car accident.
Vernon's car was found upside down in the Little River after a motorist spotted vehicle headlights in the water around 10:55 p.m. Sunday.
His car ran off the left side of Little River Road near this mountain resort town and then fell 15 feet down a rock wall into the river.
Rescue workers had to rappel down to the river and attach tow cables to the car to remove it.
Authorities estimated Vernon had been in the water about an hour. They did not know if he died from injuries sustained in the crash or from drowning. He was then flown to the hospital in Knoxville.
The accident is the first fatality in the park in over a year. A motorist was last killed on the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Spur in December 2001.
