MASSENGALE , MR. LAFORD - age 91, passed away at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, early Thursday morning, March 25, 1999. He was the son of the late Franklin and Mary Jane Massengale and was born in Scott County on July 6, 1907. Besides his parents, Mr. Massengale was preceded in death by: his wife, Birdie Ellen Massengale ; one son, Clifford Massengale ; and three infant children; one grandson, Rickie Chambers; four brothers, Esau, Levie, Elmer and McKinley Massengale ; five sisters, Elizabeth Cross, Sylvania Harness, Louella Bunch, Dora Carroll and Vianna Carroll. Mr. Massengale professed hope in Christ at an early age. He was a member and deacon for 50 years, since November 1941, of the River View Missionary Baptist Church at Smokey Junction, Tenn. Mr. Massengale is survived by: six daughters, Delsie and her husband, Earl Chambers of the Straight Fork, Tenn., Rosie Jane Cook of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Hazel Massengale of Oak Ridge, Macil and her husband, Larry Murrell of Seymour, Murtle Midge and her husband, William Carson of Dutch Valley Rd., Clinton, Aneda Thrasher of Oak Ridge; one daughter-in-law, Betty Jean Massengale of Petros; three sisters, Celia Cross, Locie Hembree and Linda Lowe, all of the Smokey Area; two sisters-in-law, Mertie Anderson and Martha Brannim; 11 grandchildren, Starlet, Pamela, Keith, Mark, Debbie, Ellen, Crystal, Billy, Eric and James; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great, great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends of the family. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at the River View Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Keith Massengale and Rev. Tom Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the Smokey Junction Cemetery. The pallbearers will be: Billy Lowe, Clem Lowe, Kern Lowe, Curtis Massengale , Gary Massengale , Clarence Carroll, Kenneth Lowe, Dillard Massengale . Honorary pallbearers: Keith Massengale , Brian and Mark Massengale , Billy Carson, Eric Carson, James Thrasher, Richie Chambers and Jimmy Crowley. The family will receive friends Friday, March 26, 1999, at the West-Murley Funeral Home after 6 p.m. West-Murley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Laford Massengale.
