U.S. Veteran Thomas Maynard Shaw, age 96, of Greenback, passed away Monday, October 18, 2010, peacefully at home. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was born April 15, 1914, in Tellico Plains, TN. Tom was raised as a believer from his early church attendance at Center Presbyterian and later to the churches of the Baptist faith. Tom lived an interesting and exciting life, which could be described to be a marvelous adventure. With his work experience operating heavy equipment, he traveled to and worked with, the US Governmental contractor building a road parallel to the Panama Canal from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific. He later served proudly in the US Navy “Sea Bees”. During the Second World War, he and a large group of Sea Bees prepared bases in England and then on to the coast of France at Cherbourg. As the war wound down in Europe, Tom was sent to the submarine base on Midway Island to aid in the Pacific Theatre of War. In later years, Tom traveled to help in building the interstate highways, nuclear plants, and electric dam sites. On December 23, 1950, Tom married Juanita Hayes Kimsey. From that point on, Tom became the father figure for fours step-children and as time passed, he was affectionately known as “PaPaw” by the four children and their spouses, eight grandchildren and their spouses, nineteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Tom has been honored. Around 1985, a complete set of World War II medals for service to his country in the two theatres of war were presented to him. On his 75th birthday, Tom was honored with a party by family, friends, and dignitaries in the Tellico Plains Community Center. Several spoke of his good deeds and his accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; parents, Luke and Ethel Pearson Shaw; brothers, Raymond and William B.; and great-great-granddaughter, Myla Kimsey. He is survived by his sisters, Nell Fry of Tellico Plains, Joyce and husband Bob VanBenthuysin of Opelika, AL, and Etheluke Odom of Panama City, FL; step-children, Pauline and husband Col. Edmund Morrisey; Joe Dean Kimsey and wife Elizabeth; Lawrence Kimsey and wife Gerry, and Shirley and husband Ralph Smith; grandchildren, Ricky Murphy, Cindy Murphy Caldwell, Bobby Kimsey and wife Penny, Denny Kimsey, Rev. Tim Kimsey and wife Tracy, Danny Kimsey and wife Karen, Patricia Smith Mucha and husband Edward, and Michel Lynn Smith and wife Monica; great-grandchildren, Eve and Lucas Caldwell, Dicie Headrick and Drew Kimsey, DJ, Aaron, Josh and Mica Kimsey, Katlin and Laken Kimsey, Katelyn, Cayleb and TJ Kimsey, Arthur, John and Gregory Mucha, and Clay, Mikaela and Garrett Smith; great-great-grandchildren, Baylor and Maguire Headrick, Morgan Kimsey, and Natalie Mucha; and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends. Funeral service will be held 8:00 PM Friday, October 22, 2010, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Tim Kimsey officiating. Interment will be held 11:00 AM Saturday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
