Ellsworth Fisher "Pete" Filby was born August 22, 1922 in Ithaca, New York to Ellsworth Lincoln Filby and Marion Fisher Filby and died on July 18, 2004. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and Kansas City, Missouri, where he became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Southwest High School in 1939. He attended Cornell University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1943. Pete served for three years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army field artillery during World War II and ran the Munich Opera House in Germany after the war. On December 13, 1944, he married Margaret Louise Redeker in Elgin, Illinois. They raised three daughters in Kansas City. Pete worked for Havens Steel Company for 30 years, where he was vice president. He served as chairman of the Gillis Home for Boys in Kansas City and was a member of the Country Club Congregational Church, where he was the treasurer and chairman of the board of trustees. Pete was active in the Kansas City Rotary Club for 34 years before he and Maggie moved to Oakland, California eight years ago. He enjoyed playing bridge, taking photographs, and listening to classical music.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie, of Oakland, California; his daughters Nikola Filby (Richard Marliave), Melissa Heuser (Steve), Barbara Snell (John); his grandchildren Rachel, Greg and Spencer Marliave, Christine and Stephanie Heuser, and Nathaniel and Alexander Snell. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Harry Filby) and his granddaughter (Rebecca Snell). A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
